Automate your web pages content with RSS feeds

:[ June 24th, 2006

One of the key ingredients to keeping your website listed high with the search engines today is fresh content.

The internet is ever growing, and ever changing. The websites of yesterday that are static only HTML pages will start to fade away as more dynamic websites take their place.

What is the difference between static HTML web sites, and dynamic web sites? Static HTML web pages will always look the same, if you hit the refresh button nothing changes on the page.

A dynamic web page will automatically change every time you hit the refresh button, or  they can change their content based on what your user does, like clicking on some text or an image. Adding Javascript to your site to make it look like the pages are ever changing will work for your human visitors, but not for the search engines.

Currently all the major search engines can not read Javascript. They see the Java code but are unable to read any of the text that the Javascript generates. There are a few ways that you can automate the process of adding search engine friendly content to your web pages.

The quickest and easiest way to add pertinent content to any web page is to use RSS Feeds. What is an RSS Feed? RSS is an acronym for "Really Simple Syndication". RSS feeds come in many different forms. News feeds that give you the latest breaking news and popular headlines on any topic directly related to your webpage. Articles can also come in the form of RSS feeds.

Thousands of industry experts are writing articles today related to just about any topic imaginable, and you can use these free of charge on all your web pages, and have them updated daily for you with out you ever having to do a thing. Blog posts are another form of RSS feeds that you can also work with. There is literally a million blogs online today, and they all put out their own unique RSS feed. When ever someone posts to their blog the RSS feed page is created.

While you may not want other peoples blog content on your web pages, if you have your own blog you can easily have your posts show up on your pages. Press release companies are also sending out RSS feeds of all the press releases submitted through their system.

Almost all RSS publishers want other websites to syndicate (republish) their feed content. That’s what RSS was invented for. There are a few programs out today that will help you master the power of RSS feeds, and at the same time automate the whole process for you.

These are called RSS to HTML converters, they take an RSS feed and convert it into HTML for you. All the ones that I have read about, and used are PHP based programs that install on your web server. My favorite one is RSS Content Builder I have found the Installation of these programs to be very easy, and take only a couple of minutes.

Upload the files to your server, enter in your user name, and password, your done. Once installed you have a login page that walks you through the whole process. Asking you what feeds you want to work with, how much of the feed do you want displayed on your page, title, author, date, amount of text, you can even change the back ground colors or border around the feeds, even tell it how often you want the feeds updated, hourly, or daily.

There are many more options that are available to you when working with these programs most of them are nothing more then selecting a check box. No programming skills needed.

In closing I want to restate that search engines love fresh content. Using RSS Content Builder on your website is a great way to keep new content on them automatically forever.

Get extra credit - turn your blog posts into articles

:[ June 20th, 2006

Ok so you have a blog, and your posting to it daily, your using all
the latest methods, of Blog and Ping, Tag and Ping and your’re
also using the Social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us.

While these are all great marketing techniques you shouldn’t
limit yourself to just a few traffic generating methods.

Now its time to kick your advertising into over drive by simple
converting at least one post a week into an article.

Choose one of your best posts, and the expand on it. You don’t need
a 2000 word article, 250 to 400 words can work just as well or better.

While there are hundreds of article submission sites available today,
I would suggest sticking with just the top 10 or 20 if you try to do more
then that, what you end up doing is wasting your time on submitting,
that you could be spending on creating more articles.

So how does submitting articles drive free targeted traffic to your website?

There are thousands of Ezines today that are always looking for fresh new
content to post in their Ezines (Online magazines) If they use your article
in their Ezine then you get the credit.

For a fee you can also use an Article submission services that will handle
the submissions for you.

But Ezines are not the only ones that will use your article.

Other website owners will use your articles as content on their website
with the agreement that your link, and contact info remain in tact.

Articles are also being turned into RSS feeds.

There are a few article submission sites that will even convert
your article into an RSS feed for you.

What is an RSS feed?

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication as it is commonly known, is a technology
that gives webmasters the ability to easily distribute and publish syndicated
content on the Internet.

Since you are already blogging you should already know about RSS feeds.

Thousands of websites pick up RSS feeds and display them on their site in order to add fresh, pertinent content to their webpages.

I use a program called RSS Content Builder to add RSS Feeds on all my sites. Every time the search engine bots pay a visit to one of my sites, they will see that the pages has been updated with new pertinent content. This keeps the search engine spiders coming back to reindex my pages over and over again.

I also do this to make my websites more interesting for my visitors.

So to quickly sum up the benefits of turning your best blog posts into articles.

Back links from other websites, this means a higher page rank for your site.

Direct traffic from the article itself.

RSS feeds that are being displayed on other websites.

If your article is really news worthy it may even get picked up by a newspaper.

This same strategy can also work both ways, if your already writing articles,
but not posting them to your blog, and using the marketing techniques of Blog and Ping or Tang and Ping. Your losing out on free traffic, and back links.

How is Web Conferencing Used today?

:[ June 18th, 2006

There are many different ways that web conferencing services are
being used today.

Distance based learning, also known as E-learning is growing by leaps,
and bounds today. Web conferencing software makes it real easy for
students and instructors to meet in an interactive environment no matter
where in the world they are. They also do not have to worry about security
issues, as todays online conferencing solutions are using encryption
algorithms to protect the integrity of there meets.

Business Conferencing is another area that web conferencing is becoming
common place today. Companies that have offices that are located around
the world can easily brainstorm with one another, securely share files, desk
top sharing of live data, or just giving a presentation using PowerPoint.

This is saving companies money they would be spending on travel, and on
lost productivity.

Telecommuting is another area that is hitting a big growth spike today. With
more then 45 million Americans today working full or part time from the home, Studies have shown an actual increase in employee productivity when working at home, as well as a huge savings in travel time, to and from the office, and gas savings from not having to drive every day.

Web conferencing software can easily keep everyone in touch with one another just as if they were all in the same conference room together. Sharing ideas, data files, pictures, with no worry of having to use email to transmit any of these important documents.

Using it as an inter-office communications tool can also reduce the amount
of email viruses that are plaguing both large and small business today. By using a secure system like this to transfer your files, you can reduce the chances of one of your employees accidently clicking on an attachment that was sent to them by some hacker or spammer. Even a 10% reduction in virus attacks today could save corporations million of dollars in lost revenue.

Sales and marketing departments can quickly, and easily hold live interactive
multi-media presentations with customers, and clients located anywhere in the world, saving everyone involved travel time, and expenses.

Until recently using a web conferencing service was only affordable to large
fortune 500 companies due to the costs involved but now there are alternatives to spending thousands of dollars a month for a conferencing solution that would only accommodate 100 to 200 people at a time.

302 hijacking is your website safe?

:[ June 17th, 2006

I was absolutely floored I was Googling my Wedding Directory site using
the allinurl:www.website.com and I found six other websites that showed
up in the results as being part of my site.

The allinurl will show you what internal pages Google has indexed for your site, and I had recently added a bunch of new pages to the site and was curious if Google had indexed them yet.

As soon as I clicked on those offending links I noticed that the pages were
redirected almost instantly to another site. But the kicker was it was my
Wedding site framed inside their site. With Google adsense ads floating
around. Where ever you moved your mouse the ads would follow.

I have been working on my Wedding Directory site for years, I have more then 800 wedding professionals listed on the site. The last thing I wanted or needed was this to happen.

After trying to contact the site owners… which of course was useless I stared looking for ways to stop them, and also figure out how they where able to do it.

The first place I went to was “Search Engine Watch” forums. A favorite haunt of mine, and a great place to learn insider secrets to all things SEO
related. I was amazed to find out that this has been going on for a really long time.

What I learned was that my site was being 302 hijacked.

What is 302 jacking?

302 redirects tell the search engines your site, or page, has moved temporarily to another site and to credit the content of your site to their site and thus stealing your PR.

I also found out that Google is very aware of it, but either can not, or will not do anything about it. That is until you report the offending sites to Google using the spam report form.

More research revealed that more then likely my website content was being stolen using a PHP script (name with held) and the use of DMOZ’s data feeds.

DMOZ - The Open Directory Project for years has been the goal of many aspiring webmasters to get listed in this highly coveted directory, with people waiting years to get listed in it. Google pulls results from DMOZ and getting listed in their directory really helps boost a websites listing with them.

My wedding directory has been in there for many years now. But with DMOZ
opening up their directory like this to any and all takers who want to use the
data-feed like that, I am not so sure I want to be in there any more.

Google claims that there is “Almost Nothing” a competitor can do to affect your rankings with them. Notice how they phrase this as “Almost Nothing”.

302 hijacking is just one of the ways that a competitor can effect your rankings. Another is stealing your website content and using it on their websites.

The search engines hate duplicate content, there are documented cases of low life webmasters that will use a competitors website content on multiple URL’s and then direct links from those sites to their main.

Just a guess but I bet there main intent was to get quick easy links to their main site from theme related sites, quickly and easily with out actually having to put any effort into creating their own original content. Google’s filters are efficient enough today to figure out when this happens, and they penalize everyone involved.

There are copyright laws that will protect the original website owner but this may very well take weeks or months to resolve. These ruthless people are using false Whois information, and no contact info on their websites.

While this is against most web hosting companies Terms Of Service agreement it still takes time to get in touch with the hosting company and have them pull the offending site down.

You can also report your stolen content to Google using there spam report, as well as other major search engines. They will most likely lose their Adsense accounts, that is if they are using your content with Adsense ads.

Lori’s web design has put together the most complete up to date listing
that I could find on Hijackings with 302 Redirects, meta refresh redirects,
no follow meta tags, and other deceptive redirects, and ways to help protect
yourself from these forms of attacks. Thank you Lori.

Tools and tips to automate your Tag and Ping

:[ June 16th, 2006

I found a great plug in for WordPress to help you add tags to your posts.
It’s called “Simple Tags“. It’s  a quick and easy method to add Technorati tags to your posts.

If you are a WordPress user, Technorati automatically recognizes
your categories and uses them as Tags to classify your posts.

But if you do not want a list of 30 or more categories on your blog page then using “Simple Tags” is a great way to do it.

Not everyone wants to mess with adding plug-ins in to their blog, so here is a site that will generate the code for you.

Tag Generator & Social Bookmark Link Creator from Evil Genius.

It’s real easy to work with, simply enter in the Keywords and phrases to be tagged - separate the items with commas. Hit the generate button, and the code is created for you.

Just copy the code and enter in at the bottom of your post. Depending on
which version of WordPress you are working with you may have to insert
it using the HTML insert code link.

You can even choose tags for different services besides Technorati, it will  also do tags for other sevices as well Flickr, Del.icio.us or Furl.
You can also generate Social bookmarking links for your pages.
This way people can quickly bookmark your post using any of the
following services.

Technorati, Digg, Del.icio.us, Yahoo, BlinkList, Spurl, Reddit or Furl

If your not using the Tag and Ping technique today you need to.
Google, and Yahoo are indexing, and listing these sites like crazy.

If your not sure what Tag and Ping is all about you can learn all about
it here “Tagging Secrets“.

Turn your mini-sites into Niche portals

:[ June 16th, 2006

There is no doubt that mini sites are a great way to attack
keyword rich niche markets but a few simple rules need to
be followed when doing so.

Rule #1: Create webpages that clearly offer value, useful
information, theme based content, like articles for your visitor.

Rule #2: Create webpages that are designed to offer a service
to the visitor price comparisons, rebates,  Q&As, products
ratings and reviews that educate consumers or help them
make an informed buying decision, etc.

Rule #3: Do NOT create webpages that use any kind of “Black
Hat” SEO tricks like sneaky redirects that are plastered with affiliate
links and that are clearly designed to do nothing more that usher
people to an affiliate page so you can earn a quick buck.

Note: If you focus on Rules #1-#2, affiliate links will become
natural and your chances of being penalizes are extremely low.

Rule #4: Do NOT fall victim to using techniques and tactics that
are only designed to beat or trick the search engines  Do NOT
use cloaking, hidden text, keyword stuffing, display scraped
search engine results.

Rule #5: Make your website stand on its own. If all the outgoing
affiliate links and product recommendation links were removed
from your site, would your website still offer value to visitors?
Or merely a bunch of webpages stuffed with garbage and
meaningless text.

I know this may sound redundant but if you want your website to
succeed you need to be creating “High Quality” content rich websites.

There are ways to help you add quality content to your site automatically.

RSS Feeds for one, I have been using a great program to help me with
this called RSS Content Builder. With out a doubt this has to be my all
time favorite program. It’s easy to use, and the search engines love the
fresh content on my site.

Here is a free program that I also love is called Orwell it helps you automate the process of adding articles quickly and easily to your website.

Yup you can actually load your website up with content rich articles
that other people have written… not only is it 100% legal the Authors
are almost begging you to do it. The search engines love it when you
create helpful sites like this.

What your are doing is creating a niche portal. Something that people will
bookmark and tell others about as a resource site.

You can find hundreds of thousands of articles today on a never ending
array of subjects. So if you have found a keyword rich niche that could use
a portal. Then this is a fantastic way to go about it.

While Orwell is a free to use program and what it does it does real well.
It is not 100% automated, you still have to find the articles, copy the code,
and paste it into HTML template.  For the price what it does is fantastic.

If you truly want to automate your website so that it automatically builds
itself then here is another program that I can not say enough good things
about.

The Article System

This tool will gather keyword-rich articles, and instantly generate customized web pages that will bring targeted traffic to your site. The pages are created right on your website so you don’t even have to upload them!

You can tell it to add 10 pages a day to website “A”, 15 pages a day to website “B”, and 9 pages a day to another website you own. What it allows you to do is slowly build your websites up with content a little at a time.

Just as if you were doing it by hand… this way you are not going to get penalized for mass producing webpages.

It will work with any website template that you have or they even will supply you with a few of their own..

To maximize my pages I have been adding a few inserts of RSS Feeds using the RSS Content builder program. This way all my article pages are getting updated daily with fresh theme related content.

I have been building sites for going on eight years now, and have bought and used a lot of different programs. Very few of them would I ever recommend. These two programs I must say are tops on my list.

Google image search how to use it to your advantage

:[ June 14th, 2006

Here is such an easy search engine optimization tip it just amazes me that more people are not using it to there advantage.

Google images is the most searched image database on the planet today but so many people are missing out on free targeted traffic by not properly optimizing their images.

Google does a good job trying to figure out what an image is suppose to be about by examining the keywords that it finds close to the image found on a web page.

There is so much  you can do to help them out. By doing so can really increase targeted traffic to your website.

To give you a quick example from one of my VoIP phone sites I had over 300 visitors in one month click into my site from Google images. The image was a picture of a VoIP phone and all I did was take the time to optimize the image, Google did the rest.

First thing you should do is every time you save an image that will be on a web page you need to be as descriptive as possible when saving it.

Example: cell-phone-nokia.jpg instead of just phone.jpg

Proper usage of the Alt tags. I either see no Alt tag usage or webmasters
that go to the other extreme and spam the Alt tag with too many keywords.

The Alt tag was originally designed to assist people who turn off images
in there browser so web pages would load faster on their computer.
The Alt tag text would fill in the area were the image would normally load up.

So in sticking with our example we used earlier if the picture was of a VoIP phone then what I should have entered in for the Alt text is VoIP phone from Packet 8.

When working with Alt text try and use your keywords as prominently as possible. Put your top keywords as close to the beginning as possible but make sure it makes sense, remember people are reading these too. If it looks like spam this well reflect back on you.

Another thing to keep in mind is keyword Frequency

Keyword frequency refers to the number of times a keyword or keyword
phrase appears within a web page.

The theory is that the more times a keyword or keyword phrase appears
within a web page, the more relevance a search engine is likely to give
the page for a search with those keywords.

When working your keyword Frequency do not forgot about Keyword density you do not want to over do it, and have points taken away for word spamming.

Rule of thumb keep your keyword density from 2% to 8%.

So if your keyword density for a given word is getting to high you may want to use an alternative keyword in your Alt text. Example instead of VoIP phone, I would use PC phone or Internet Phone for my Alt text.

So many people are hot for the back links today they are forgetting about the basics. We all know that on page SEO is not going to get you a page one listing in Google today but with Google using more then 100 different page ranking methods shouldn’t you use as many of them on your pages as possible.
